Role: Part-time, permanent (20 hours per week, rising up to 37.5 hours as needed)

Salary: £21,000 to £23,000 (pro-rata based on experience, probationary salary)

Celtic English Academy, established in 2004, is a friendly and welcoming British Council accredited English language school in the centre of Cardiff. We take pride in our small class sizes, great teachers and wonderful support staff. We offer a range of beginner to advanced level English language courses for international students including, but not limited to; General English, IELTS Exam Preparation, Cambridge Exam Preparation, Teacher Development Courses, One-to-One lessons for adult students, and bespoke packaged programmes for both adult and young learners.

Each year approximately 1000 adult students with an average of 11 weeks stay study with us from up to 50 different nationalities. We accommodate 150 - 350 students at any one time and we strive to always have a motivating and student-focused environment where we can offer a great service to all that study with us 

Responsibilities of the HR Officer

Purpose of the Post

To provide a strictly private and confidential HR service to all staff, looking after aspects of our organisation's functioning including but not limited to HR-related administration; employee relations; benefits and recruitment in line with statutory benefits and best practice; applying and advising on employment law in line with advice from Moorepay (Celtics employment law advisory system); and supporting the CEO as well as other managers with HR related queries.

The person appointed to the role of HR Officer will be line-managed by the CEO.

Criteria

Essential

  • Any education, training or qualifications relating to human resources, business management or administration  
  • Maths and English at GCSE at B or above
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel
  • Experience of working independently without ongoing supervision
  • Experience of administration of recruitment
  • Experience supporting staff members across a variety of departments with administration and HR-related queries
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience HR-related administration
  • Experience of delivering skills training or advising others in the workplace
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Excellent organisational skills with a good attention to detail
  • Excellent administrative skills
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Tact and diplomacy to work with confidential information and building relationships
  • Ability to work to deadlines
  • Commercial awareness
  • Self-motivated and able to use initiative
  • Adaptable to change and innovative
  • Enthusiastic team player keen to help others develop in an atmosphere of constructive feedback
  • Client focussed with warm, friendly and empathetic attitude
  • Ability to be flexible with hours at short notice

Desirable

  • Any certificate relating to Safeguarding of children and/or vulnerable adults
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Prevent Training
  • Fire safety and/or health and safety training
  • Undergraduate degree – 1st Class or 2:1
  • Enhanced DBS certificate
  • Training in using in bespoke HR software packages
  • Knowledge of employment law and best practice
  • Knowledge of HR functions (pay and benefits, recruitment, staff welfare, sickness)
  • Knowledge of the EFL sector
  • Experience of conducting grievance, disciplinary and investigatory meetings
  • Experience of assisting a company or charity to comply with internal or external standards
  • Experience of working in an SME
  • Ability to form working relationships with people at all levels
