Salary: £16, 832 per annum

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week (flexibility required)

Introduction

The Wallich is a homelessness charity which provides support services to homeless and vulnerably-housed people. The organisation formed in 1978 in Cardiff, and now supports around 4000 people a year across the majority of Local Authorities in Wales. The Wallich's values are of empowerment and treating people with dignity, respect and an unconditional positive regard. The principles of our work are based around solution focused working, harm reduction, and the creation of an environment where the people we support are actively and meaningfully encouraged to be involved in their support, and the development and delivery of services.

Project Description

The project is located in Bridgend and works with single homeless people. The service provides residential support with the aim of meeting individuals’ needs, which promote independence and lead to a sustainable move-on. The project is funded through the Supporting People Programme Grant and is required to meet the Welsh Government’s National Outcomes Framework. The Framework’s four main aims are:

• Promoting Personal and Community Safety

• Promoting Independence and Control

• Promoting Economic Progress and Financial Control

• Promoting Health and Wellbeing

Purpose of Role

To provide residential and floating support that enables and empowers Service Users to address housing and/or personal difficulties, build their skills and confidence, and ultimately improve their ability to maintain their future or current accommodation.  The support will not create or increase dependence. It will ‘do with’ rather than ‘do for’, so it’s likely that support will involve accompanying Service Users initially, in order to familiarise them with an activity or appointment. Support will help people improve their control, understanding and involvement in dealing with the issues that affect them, and assist Service Users to achieve their preferred outcomes. In addition, to assist with the housing management needs of the project ensuring the delivery of a safe, secure and effective service.

Person Profile

Knowledge

  • Basic knowledge of Homelessness Law, the Criminal Justice System and DWP Benefits.
  • Basic Knowledge of substance misuse and its effects on people, their families and their communities.
  • Basic Knowledge of how complex needs including mental health can affect individuals and their vulnerability.

Experience

  • Experience of / working with vulnerable people.
  • Experience of housing related support or homelessness (this can be from a personal perspective).
  • Experience of delivering support is desirable.
  • Experience of recording your work in paper or digital systems is desirable.

  • Able to respect personal choice and work non-judgementally with people who hold different views and lifestyles from your own.
  • Able to work within professional boundaries.
  • Able to manage conflict and deal with challenging situations.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. 

Community Partnership and Networking:

  • Ability to build beneficial relationships with a range of agencies.
  • Ability to confidently and professionally challenge judgemental stereotypes and inappropriate practice.
  • Confident and able to lone work on own initiative.

Project and Team Working:

  • Ability to form positive working relationships with members of the team and the wider organisation.
  • Ability to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Reliable and possess an understanding of how your personal lifestyle can have positive and negative impacts on your own performance and attendance.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Competent using Microsoft Word, Excel and MS Outlook to a basic level.
  • Committed to own continued professional development.

Other

  • Driving licence and own vehicle is essential
  • Ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable but not essential

Induction details: New starters at The Wallich will be required to complete a 5 day Induction in Cardiff at the commencement of their employment.
